65 Roses Barnsley Criteriums

Town Centre cycle racing made a welcome return to Barnsley on Tuesday night with the 65 Roses Barnsley Criteriums, sponsored by Planet X. With many members of Team Cystic Fibrosis having raced in the town centre in their junior days it was an emotional night.

The Women’s race, sponsored by Belle Lingerie, started the evenings racing with Matrix Fitness Vulpine pair Jessie Walker and Penny Rowson breaking away from Ione Sewell of GB cycles to deliver a team 1-2.

Barnsley’s own Dieter Droger (Pioneer Scott) sprinted to victory in the Wybone Men’s Support Race leading home Karl Freeman (Wheelguru) and Dominic Smith (Retford and District Wheelers).

The Team Cystic Fibrosis Elite Race saw the Downing brothers return to Barnsley, just two more riders with memorys of the circuit from their junior days. Dean Downing (NFTO) and Steve Lampier (Velosure Giordana) broke clear early in the race and stayed clear. With the race looking to be heading for a sprint finish Lampier attacked on the climb up Shambles Street leaving Downing in his wake with a jammed chain. However, a puncture with two laps to go scuppered Lampier’s chance of the win leaving Downing to win on his return, Lampier had built up a sufficient cushion to carry out wheel change and still hang on for second. The final spot on the podium went to Richard Hepworth (Velosure Giordana).

Team Cystic Fibrosis would like to thank all of the volunteers, sponsors and Barnsley Council for the support that helped make the event such a success.

See you next year!
